Privacy Policy

Last updated

  • We collect what it takes to run ChooseIt: your Google name, email and picture, your username, and what you do in the app, like groups, swipes, friends and topics.
  • Your swipes stay private. Other members only see something you liked once enough of the group liked it too and it becomes a match.
  • We don't sell your data, show ads or use tracking cookies. The only cookies keep you signed in.
  • Your data is stored in the EU (Frankfurt). You can download it or delete your account from Settings.

Who we are

ChooseIt is operated by Yonathan Wolloch, an individual in Israel (“we”, “us”). We decide how your personal data is used in ChooseIt and are responsible for it.

For anything about your data, email support@chooseit.dev. There is no postal address for ChooseIt.

What we collect

When you sign in with Google

  • Your name, email address and profile picture.
  • Your Google account ID, and the sign-in tokens Google issues. These only allow access to your basic profile. We never see your Google password.

What you create in ChooseIt

  • Your username and your personal invite code.
  • Groups you create or join: their name, topic, filters, settings and members.
  • Your swipes: each like or pass, which group and topic it was in, and when you made it. We also record which matches you’ve seen.
  • Friend requests, friends, and the invite links you create.
  • Custom topics you create: their name, description, items and who they’re shared with.
  • A few app settings: whether you’ve seen the “How ChooseIt works” intro, and the state of the Support prompt (how many swipes until it next appears, and whether you’ve tapped Support).

Technical information

  • For each sign-in session: your IP address and your browser and device type (the “user agent”). We use these to keep your account secure.
  • Your IP address is also used briefly, in memory, to limit how often some actions can be repeated, so the app can’t be abused.
  • Our hosting provider keeps short-lived technical logs of requests, as any web host does.

Usage statistics

We use Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights to see which pages are used and how fast they load. They record things like the page visited, the referring site, the country, the browser, operating system and device type, and loading times. They don’t use cookies, don’t follow you to other sites, and aren’t linked to your account. Vercel tells repeat page views apart with a temporary code that it discards after 24 hours.

What we don’t collect

No payment details, no contacts, no precise location, and no advertising identifiers. If you choose to support ChooseIt, the payment happens on Ko-fi, not here.

Why we use it

  • To run ChooseIt for you: your account, groups, swipes, matches, friends and topics. This is the service you signed up for, and we can’t provide it without this data.
  • To keep it secure: session details and IP addresses help us spot and stop misuse. Keeping the app safe for everyone is our legitimate interest.
  • To improve it: the usage statistics above show us what’s slow or unused. They’re aggregate and not tied to you.
  • To reply to you when you email us.

We don’t sell your data, use it for advertising, or build profiles of you. We only use it for the purposes above.

Do you have to give us this data?

No law requires you to. But ChooseIt needs your name and email from Google to create an account, so without them you can’t sign in. Everything else, like groups, friends and custom topics, is up to you.

Who can see it

Other people in ChooseIt

  • Members of your groups see your name and picture and that you’re in the group. They don’t see your individual swipes. When an item becomes a match, they see that it matched and which members liked it.
  • Signed-in users who type your exact username can find you and see your name, username and picture. Your friends can see the custom topics you share with friends.
  • Members of a group that uses one of your custom topics see that topic’s name, description and items.

Service providers

These companies process data on our behalf, only to provide their service:

  • Vercel hosts the app (our servers run in Frankfurt, Germany) and provides the usage statistics.
  • Neon runs our database, hosted in Frankfurt, Germany.
  • Google handles sign-in. Google’s own privacy policy covers your Google account.
  • Ko-fi, only if you choose to support ChooseIt. You leave ChooseIt for Ko-fi’s site, and Ko-fi’s privacy policy covers what you share there. We don’t send Ko-fi any of your ChooseIt data.

When the law requires it

We may disclose data if a valid legal demand requires it, and only what it requires.

Where your data is stored

Your data is stored in the European Union, in Frankfurt, Germany, so it is kept outside Israel. Vercel, Neon and Google are based in the United States and may process some data there or elsewhere as part of running their services.

Cookies and browser storage

ChooseIt uses only the cookies it needs to work:

  • Sign-in cookies that keep you signed in. One holds your session, and one holds a short-lived copy of it so pages load faster.
  • Short-lived cookies during Google sign-in that protect the sign-in step.
  • A pending-invite cookie if you open an invite link before signing in, so the invite isn’t lost. It expires with the invite.

While you create a group or topic, your unfinished draft is kept in your browser tab’s session storage. It goes when you finish or close the tab.

There are no advertising or tracking cookies, which is why there’s no cookie banner.

How long we keep it

  • Your account data stays until you delete your account.
  • Expired sign-in sessions, sign-in tokens and invite links are removed by a daily clean-up.
  • Backups: our database provider keeps a short rolling history so data can be recovered after a failure. Deleted data can remain in that history for a limited time, never more than 30 days, and then it is gone.
  • Usage statistics are aggregate and kept by Vercel under its own retention rules.
  • Emails you send us are kept for as long as we need them to help you.

Your rights and choices

  • See and download your data. You can download a copy of your data from Settings, or ask us for it by email.
  • Correct it. You can change your username in Settings. For anything else that’s wrong, email us and we’ll fix it.
  • Delete it. You can delete your account from Settings, or ask us to by email. Deleting is immediate and permanent. Your swipes, friends and sessions are removed. Groups you created pass to another member, or are deleted if no one else is left. Your custom topics are deleted, unless another member’s group still uses one; then it stays for that group, without your name on it.
  • Object or ask questions about how we use your data at any time.

Email support@chooseit.dev and we’ll reply within 30 days. If you’re unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Israeli Privacy Protection Authority. If you live in the EU, you can also contact your local data protection authority.

Security

All traffic is encrypted with HTTPS. You sign in through Google, so ChooseIt never holds a password for you. Apart from our service providers running their part of the service, only the operator can access the database. If a security incident affects your data, we’ll tell you by email.

Children

ChooseIt has no minimum age. If you’re under 18, use ChooseIt with a parent’s or guardian’s permission. A parent or guardian can email us to see or delete a child’s data.

Changes to this policy

When this policy changes, we’ll update it here and change the date at the top. If a change affects how your data is used in a meaningful way, we’ll let you know before it takes effect.
